This
area in beautiful southwestern Wisconsin, is known as the
Kickapoo Valley and Ocooch Mountains, and it is known for
its superb recreation, including:
fly-fishing
canoeing
hunting
biking
cross country skiing
horseback riding
caving
golfing
ice skating
AND MUCH MORE
The Kickapoo Reserve is
a 7,000 acre tract of land surrounding the Kickapoo river,
outside of LaFarge. It
includes horseback, hiking and cross country ski trails,
excellent canoeing and kayaking, off-road biking, fishing
(especially trout fishing), hunting, caving, snowmobiling,
and nature, crafts, environmental studies, and
outdoor adventure-classes offered at the Reserve's new Visitor
Center.
The
surrounding area also offers golfing, motorcycling in the
rolling hills, ice skating, trapping, caving, and more.
community-based recreation - clubs, sports
leagues, social and charitable organizations, professional
groups, dance and music classes, theatrical presentations, etc.
VMH facilities include a WELLNESS center, racquetball court, and Bigley Indoor
Pool.
Each
town hosts an annual festival -
most include parades, carnival rides, and other
special events, such as Viola's Horse and Colt Days, or Viroqua's
Twinkle
Parade.
County
Fairs are also popular get-togethers, as are rodeos. Viroqua
hosts "Wild West Days", an event that recreates
the western frontier, complete with a period cow town.
Many
seasonal activities abound -
apple blossom and harvest festivals, fishing contests, winter
festivals, wagon trains, triathlons, rodeos, sports tournaments,
bowling
leagues, etc.
Wild
morel mushrooms and ginseng root are wild plants harvested
by enthusiasts in this area. Gardeners here find a variety of
native plants to cultivate along with cold-hardy varieties of
modern hybrids.
