Barium Swallow Studies
A swallow study may be completed, at the request of your provider, to assess
the anatomy and function of your swallow. The study will be completed by a licensed
Speech Language Pathologist and a Radiologist. A swallow study is conducted to
rule out the possibility of aspiration while eating or drinking, to analyze the
different stages of swallowing for effectiveness, and to trial therapy techniques.
A swallow study is easy and painless. There is no preparation involved. You may
eat and drink as normal prior to the study. During the study, you will be asked
to eat and drink a small amount of food and liquid of different consistencies.
The food and liquid will be mixed with barium to make them visible on x-ray.
The barium will not cause you any harm but it may slightly change the flavor
of the food.
Please check in with the main reception desk of the hospital before your scheduled
appointment. Once you are registered with the reception desk, you may check into
Radiology. The speech language pathologist will interview you prior to the study.
Please bring a list of medications you are currently taking with you to the examination.
Upon completion of the study, you will meet with the speech language pathologist
to discuss the results and therapy/techniques that will help you swallow.
