Matt Durrstein, Certified Athletic Trainer

“I grew up on a farm in southwestern Wisconsin, just outside of a small town called South Wayne. I went to Black Hawk High School and didn’t really know what I wanted to do with my life right away. I just knew that I liked medicine, sports and helping people. It was my dad who actually stumbled upon Athletic Training (AT) career information on the Internet. I thought, “Wow, that sounds like something I really would like to pursue.”

Shortly after that, I ended up choosing to go to University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point because I heard that they had a really good Athletic Training program. I received my Bachelors degree in 2012, and about five months later I took an Athletic Training position with Marshfield Clinic. I worked in the high school setting for about two and half years. In that time frame I worked with four schools outside of Marshfield and four schools in the Wisconsin Rapids area later on.

A few years ago my parents bought a small farm outside of Prairie du Chien. I really wanted to be closer to them, so when I saw that VMH had an Athletic Training opening with Westby High School I had to apply. I must say since I have started working for VMH, everyone has been very welcoming to me, and I really appreciate it! I can tell that VMH cares deeply about the community and the families that make it up, and I’m very happy to a part of that kind of health care philosophy.

Outside of athletic training I like helping my Dad on the farm. I also enjoy working out on a regular basis, paddle boarding on the backwaters of the Mississippi River, doing some single track mountain biking and cooking for family and friends.

I’m really looking forward to working with the Westby School District this upcoming school year. I hope to foster some wonderful relationships within the community for many years to come.”
