VMH Emergency Department

VMH offers world-class, small-town emergency care 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Our team is here for you and can stabilize any emergency condition, from heart attacks to major trauma. We do this while always striving to treat everyone like family.

Our emergency physicians, emergency PAs and NPs are highly trained and have dedicated their careers to providing exceptional emergency care. Our doctors include academic professors, former chief residents, medical directors, air medical physicians, and more.

Our nurses, ED Techs and support staff, strive to provide competent and compassionate care. We work together as a team to give you the best experience possible, even when faced with surges of multiple issues at once. Our ED nurse manager has years of expertise and serves in a variety of leadership roles, including state level disaster management. She is still also at the bedside, when needed.

Our modern ED was renovated fully in 2018 and includes 11+ private rooms. We have immediate access to laboratory, x-ray, and CT. Patients may use our climate-controlled garage to load and unload, with our staff there to assist as needed.

We utilize the best in class medical record systems connected to most hospitals across the area and country. Our ED is stocked with the most current medications, equipment and supplies available to us. For example, we can deploy a variety of high-tech video airway devices and routinely use bedside ultrasound and digital X-rays. Our partners in primary care, general and trauma surgery, obstetrics, orthopaedics and other specialties are available to consult with 24 hours a day.

We're honored to be here for you.

Emergency Surgery

This non-elective surgery is performed when a patient’s life or wellbeing is in direct jeopardy. Because of the unique conditions for urgent acute surgery, operations are usually performed by a surgical team specially trained for management of a critical, or life-threatening event.

Acute surgical emergencies may include:

  • Appendix
  • Bowel obstructions
  • Caesarean sections
  • Fractures
  • Obstetrical-related emergencies
  • Perforated ulcer
  • Peritonitis
  • Strangulated hernias

Expert Trauma Response

All members of VMH’s Trauma Response Team receive continuing education on injury prevention and quality-improvement measures.

Our Trauma Response Team plans the care of trauma patients even before they arrive in the VMH Emergency Department. Local emergency medical services respond to an emergency and then alert our emergency team as soon as possible with information on the condition of all trauma patients being transported to the hospital.

When this call comes in, our emergency staff alerts personnel who are experts in caring for these patients. The team is ready and waiting when the patient arrives so that quick diagnostics, treatment and possible transfer arrangements can be expedited. This team approach to treating trauma victims is designed to improve the outcomes of severely injured patients.
